Worm gear mechanisms are often used to transmit motion and power between two interleaved shafts. The gear reduction ratio of worm gears is generally 20:1, and sometimes even as high as 300:1 or greater. Worm gears have following characteristics:

- A large transmission ratio can be obtained, which is more compact than a cross-shaft helical gear mechanism.

- The meshing tooth surfaces of a worm gear and a worm are in line contact. Its load-bearing capacity is much higher than that of a cross-axis helical gear mechanism

- A worm drive is equivalent to a spiral drive, which is multi-tooth meshing transmission. The transmission is stable and the noise is small.

- A worm gear mechanism is self-locking, which can realize reverse self-locking, that is, only a worm can drive a worm wheel, and the worm cannot be driven by the worm wheel.

- The transmission efficiency is low and the wear is serious.
