A gear shaft refers to a mechanical part that supports a rotating part and rotates with it to transmit motion, torque or bending moment. It is generally in the shape of a metal round rod and each section can have different diameters. The rotating parts of the machine are mounted on the shaft. The gear shaft is mainly composed of shaft groove, shaft shoulder, gear and ring groove. It is one of the core components of rotating machinery and equipment. Because of its high efficiency, low friction, low resistance, simple and convenient equipment, it is widely used in large, medium and small machinery. Gears of gear shafts include spur gears, helical gears, and herringbone gears.

Regarding to design, uses of gear shafts generally include following situations:

- A gear shaft is generally a pinion (a gear with a small number of teeth);

- A gear shaft is generally in the high-speed end (the low-torque end);

- A gear shaft is rarely used as sliding gears for variable speeds because it is in the high-speed end, not suitable for sliding shifting;

- The length of a shaft should be shortened as much as possible. Otherwise, the shaft needs to be thickened and mechanical strength (such as rigidity, deflection, bending resistance, etc.) needs to be increased.
